The Flying Dutchman, Act 1

Sea scenes are projected on the back wall of the lower part of the set, i.e., the world below the stairs. The video was always used to suggest not only the chaos and danger of the sea but also the madness of Senta's obession. At one point her red storybook and her toy boat were seen floating and sinking in the water. Later two separate videos are projected, one seeming to pull the upper world down to the staircase, the other pulling the lower world up, so that the two visual streams mean along the seam of the staircase; again, as idea and as image this is astonishingly effective.
